Lead With Responsibility
How can I become the best patient that I can be – that is my responsibility,
This is the quality that inspires those around us to rise above their best – that can only be a good thing in building an effective team around our challenge.
Shifting Perceptions: Changing the Angle of Attack:
To succeed over cancer is to dismantle the diagnosis, to strip it of its reputational packaging, to see it as it really is, not as you fear it is. It is only then that you will be ready to effectively respond.
Follow the Process: The Process methodically breaks the cancer down into small, winnable pieces. It keeps you focused on conquering each step in front of you now – today, removing the disempowering distractions posed by the enormity of the challenge. One step seamlessly follows the next wearing down the cancer’s defences.” Steve Holmes – Patient

Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation Australia is a profoundly unique Patient-led Cancer, Genomic, and Advocacy Research solution.
Our focus is on more fully utilizing today’s medical science for today’s patient toolkit and survival.
Unlike traditional models, our mission diverges to more directly address the needs of today’s patient survival. This initiative and strategic positioning spearheads patient-led innovation, creating bridges between medical science, healthcare delivery, patient empowerment, and response capabilities.
CCF Australia’s support and resources herein are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your healthcare provider or qualified medical professional with any questions you may have regarding your medical condition or treatment options.
The Patient Navigator Journals and Toolkits Deliver The Optimal Cancer Response – What We Call ‘The Process’:
A methodical approach dismantles cancer diagnoses into manageable steps. Focusing intently on immediate actions required, this strategy diverts attention from the disempowering overwhelm of the broader challenge, ensuring progress through each step. This structured process crucially boosts patients’ capabilities to effectively respond and survive an unexpected diagnosis, offering two pivotal pathways: response and readiness, each meticulously designed to support patients comprehensively.
Cholangiocarcinoma is a cancer of the bile ducts. It is often referred to as Biliary Tree Cancer (BTC) or Bile Duct Cancer (BDC)
In Greek:’Chol’e’ means Bile and ‘angio’ means vessel or container. Bile ducts are thin slender tubes.
Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a cancer that begins within the lining of the bile ducts that originate from the liver where bile is produced. The bile ducts are like an estuary of small rivers feeding into one common bile duct that leaves the liver flowing to the gallbladder and finally, the small intestine (Duodenum) read more here
Subsets of Cholangiocarcinoma
CCA has 3 primary diagnosis locations of origin; Intrahepatic, Perihilar, and Distal. It is very important that you have a basic grasp of your exact CCA diagnosis.
It should also be noted that the ‘Gall Bladder’ falls under ‘Extrahepatic‘ as does Ampular of Vater; The Ampulla of Vater is the spot where the pancreatic and bile ducts release their secretions into the intestines. (not shown in the diagram)
Locations of Primary Origin
- Red = Intrahepatic (within the Liver)
- Green = Hilar (Region)
- Upper Green = Perihilar (outside of Liver)
- Left Green = Gallbladder
- Orange = Distal (farthest from the Liver)

World Cholangiocarcinoma Day
Light Australia Green
70 (and counting) of Australia’s best landmarks are going Green on the 15th of February to signify respect for those who fought hard and have fallen and fortitude to those we fight for today. This is just one step in the process to turn patients into survivors.
Hello, my name is Karen, I am a stage 4 Cholangiocarcinoma patient. The Light Australia Green initiative is my way of contributing ‘something special’ with the opportunity I still have. There can be no greater gift in life than being free to share our knowledge, experience, and wisdom in a manner that provides benefits beyond ourselves. Something that helps make other patient’s lives more liveable and shines a light on what is possible. ‘Light Australia Green’ is that special light and my ‘something special.
Warmest Regards
Karen

14,000 kms. Ouch!
Cycling Around Australia
I am currently cycling the equivalent of Australia’s coastline for our Cholangio Warriors:
Why am I doing this? Because I can – it’s the least I can do to raise funds for this amazing innovation in patient empowerment – Smart Interactive Navigator Journals and Digital Toolkits.
I want to ensure that every patient receives a free Patient Navigator Journal, they have the capability of flipping the diagnosis on its head.
Imagine pedaling the entire coastline of Australia Yip pretty nuts! – that’s 14,000 kms, a challenging journey, but one with a purpose far greater than the distance.
Thanks to those who have jumped on and supported this effort – it helps fire up my tiring legs, especially into the summer cyclonic winds,
Steve
